Falkirk Tryst Market
|
For over a century, from 1785 until the late 19th century, Stenhousemuir had hosted what was arguably the largest livestock market in Britain. The Falkirk Tryst Market took place on the second Tuesday of August, September, and October and during this time, farmers from all over Scotland would gather to sell cattle, sheep & horses to buyers from all over Great Britain.
"Having Carried our readers to the Highlands, we most, at the risk of being somewhat episodical, request that on their return south they will accompany us to Falkirk Moor on the second Monday or Tuesday in either September or October. They will there witness a scene to which certainly Great Britain, perhaps even the whole world, does not offer a parallel." Thomas Gisbourne "Essay on Agricuilture" |
The Stenhousemuir Christmas Market is a significant event that marks the first dedicated outdoor market to be held on the grounds of the Falkirk Tryst Market in over 120 years. The market will showcase the Heart of Stenhousemuir, which is better known as The Big Coos. It is a sculpture by Alan Potter that commemorates Stenhousemuir's history as a great cattle market of the 18th century. The Heart of Stenhousemuir will be situated in the center of the market, and it will undoubtedly be a remarkable attraction for visitors.
